The main corridor for the Democratic Republic of Congo\u2019s copper, cobalt and other mineral \u200bexports is expected to reopen on Tuesday after \u200croad damage halted flows, Zambia\u2019s infrastructure minister told Reuters on Monday.<\/p>\n
Congo is Africa\u2019s largest copper producer and the \u200bworld\u2019s second-largest copper producer by output. It is \u200balso the world\u2019s dominant cobalt supplier,\u00a0producing over \u206070%\u00a0of global cobalt output and exporting the \u200bbulk of it alongside other key battery minerals.<\/p>\n
Traffic through \u200bKasumbalesa, the busiest crossing for Congo\u2019s metal shipments \u2013 mainly destined for China and the United States \u2013 was suspended on Sunday \u200bafter heavy rains washed away a portion of \u200bthe road.<\/p>\n
No mining company has so far reported that copper or \u200ccobalt \u2060shipments have been held up.<\/p>\n
Minister Charles Milupi said while the route remains closed, freight operators from both countries can divert through the Mokambo crossing in \u200bMufulira, or \u200bthe Sakanya \u2060border near Ndola \u2013 an alternative that is almost three times longer than the \u200bKasumbalesa run.<\/p>\n
Footage on social media showed \u200btrucks and \u2060pedestrians stranded along the corridor.<\/p>\n
