Somalia\u2019s ambassador to the United Nations, Abukar Dahir Osman, called Israel\u2019s recognition of Somaliland\u00a0a \u2018calculated distraction’\u00a0on Friday, as the country assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters, the diplomat said the Israeli decision aimed at deflecting attention from its war in Gaza and its occupation of the West Bank.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe idea of recognizing part of Somalia, I think we believe it was a calculated effort by the Israelis occupying force to distract the world,”\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n
He also said reports that Somaliland accepted to receive Palestinians from Gaza would be unacceptable.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat Israel\u2019s goal is, I think it\u2019s not even secret. They want to export the Palestinian from Gaza to any country that accepts,”\u00a0Osman said.<\/p>\n
Somaliland has dismissed these accusations as\u00a0“false claims”\u00a0and\u00a0“baseless allegations.”<\/p>\n
On 26 December,\u00a0Israel became the first country to officially recognise Somalia\u2019s breakaway region of Somaliland\u00a0as an independent nation.<\/p>\n
