{"id":18563,"date":"2025-11-12T12:40:29","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T12:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=18563"},"modified":"2025-11-12T12:40:29","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T12:40:29","slug":"angola-celebrates-50-years-of-independence-with-lourenco-calling-for-inclusive-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/18563\/angola-celebrates-50-years-of-independence-with-lourenco-calling-for-inclusive-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Angola celebrates 50 years of independence with Louren\u00e7o calling for &#8220;inclusive society&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Angola celebrated the 50th anniversary of its independence from Portugal on Tuesday with a military parade in Luanda.<\/p>\n<p>Soldiers, marching bands and tanks paraded through the capital&#8217;s Republic Square to mark the occasion, before President Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o addressed the nation from the stands of the Independence Memorial.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve made a difficult journey in these 50 years,&#8221;\u00a0said Louren\u00e7o, citing political difficulties during the Cold War and overcoming Portuguese colonialisation.<\/p>\n<p>Angola declared independence from Portugal on 11 November 1975, at the end of a 13-year war, but the country quickly entered a devasting civil war that killed between 500,000 and 1 million people and ended only in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>The president said his government will focus on building an\u00a0&#8220;inclusive society with equal opportunities for all citizens, &#8221;\u00a0while recognising that Angola continues to face\u00a0&#8220;enormous&#8221;\u00a0and\u00a0&#8220;highly complex&#8221;\u00a0challenges.<\/p>\n<p>After 50 years, despite progress in infrastructure and urban development, oil-rich Angola remains\u00a0plagued by economic and social inequalities.<\/p>\n<p>Issues related to poverty, unemployment or access to education and healthcare remain.<\/p>\n<p>As of 2018, about a third of the Angolan population lived under the international poverty line of $2.15 a day, according to the World Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The same data found that about 16.5 million Angolans, or 52.9% of the population, lived on less than $3.65 per person per day \u2014 the international poverty line for lower-middle income countries.<\/p>\n<p>In his address, Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o also cited\u00a0&#8220;the volatile situation in the African Sahel countries, the wars in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo&#8221;\u00a0as issues that deserve\u00a0&#8220;our full attention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"all: initial !important;\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Angola celebrated the 50th anniversary of its independence from Portugal on Tuesday with a military parade in Luanda.
