{"id":18552,"date":"2025-11-11T14:47:27","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T14:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=18552"},"modified":"2025-11-11T14:47:27","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T14:47:27","slug":"gabon-wife-and-son-of-former-president-ali-bongo-face-corruption-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/18552\/gabon-wife-and-son-of-former-president-ali-bongo-face-corruption-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"Gabon: Wife and son of former president Ali Bongo face corruption trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sylvia Bongo Ondimba and Noureddin Bongo Valentin, the wife and son of\u00a0former Gabonese president Ali Bongo, are being tried in absentia on corruption charges.<\/p>\n<p>The trial opened on Monday before a special criminal court and will continue throughout the week.<\/p>\n<p>Sylvia Bongo Ondimba and Noureddin Bongo Valentin are among 13 people accused of having misused the resources of the Gabonese presidency for their own gain.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the defendants face 12 charges including embezzlement of public funds, money laundering, active corruption and forging official documents.<\/p>\n<p>The former first lady and her son were arrested in August 2023, after the coup that deposed President Ali Bongo and put an end to the 55-year rule of the Bongo family.<\/p>\n<p>Sylvia and Noureddin Bongo spent\u00a0about 20 months in detention\u00a0until their release in May 2025.<\/p>\n<p>They claim to have suffered torture during their imprisonment in Libreville.\u00a0&#8220;The treatment of our family has been criminal and cruel, and we will fight to the end to ensure that the truth is known and justice is done,&#8221;\u00a0they said in a statement in July.<\/p>\n<p>The former first lady and her son\u00a0are currently in exile\u00a0in London and have refused to appear in court.<\/p>\n<p>They deny all accusations and have denounced a trial made for show. Noureddin Bongo has argued the proceedings do not meet\u00a0\u201cthe conditions for a fair and equitable trial.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The son of the deposed leader has gained attention for his recent activity on social media, where he posted hidden camera footage to denounce his treatment by the administration of\u00a0President Brice Oligui Nguema.<\/p>\n<p>The Gabonese presidency has accused him of attempting to destabilise the country.<\/p>\n<div style=\"all: initial !important;\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sylvia Bongo Ondimba and Noureddin Bongo Valentin, the wife and son of\u00a0former Gabonese president Ali Bongo, are being tried in absentia on corruption charges.
