{"id":18364,"date":"2025-10-27T13:15:03","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T13:15:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=18364"},"modified":"2025-10-27T13:15:03","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T13:15:03","slug":"south-africas-ramaphosa-takes-diplomatic-charm-offensive-to-switzerland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/18364\/south-africas-ramaphosa-takes-diplomatic-charm-offensive-to-switzerland\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s Ramaphosa takes diplomatic charm offensive to Switzerland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa will undertake a state visit to Switzerland from 29 to 30 October to strengthen cooperation in trade, science, and youth development, the Presidency announced on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Invited by Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter, Ramaphosa will travel to Bern to advance bilateral relations aimed at inclusive growth and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>According to presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya, the visit will spotlight efforts to expand investment, skills development, and scientific collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA key focus of the visit will also be advancement of a youth cooperation framework aimed at promoting training and capacity building to equip young people with the skills required in the modern economy,\u201d Magwenya said.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa is Switzerland\u2019s leading African partner in science and technology, with joint initiatives such as the Square Kilometre Array Observatory underscoring shared commitments to global research.<\/p>\n<p>The two countries have signed 22 bilateral agreements covering air services, taxation, development cooperation and visa facilitation.<\/p>\n<p>Switzerland ranks among South Africa\u2019s key European trading partners.<\/p>\n<p>While South African Revenue Service data places bilateral trade at R18.2 billion (about $1.1 billion) in 2024, Swiss figures \u2013 factoring in gold exports \u2013 show trade volumes reaching R159.5 billion, positioning Switzerland as South Africa\u2019s sixth largest trading partner.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa\u2019s exports include gold, machinery, wine, fruit and base metals, while imports from Switzerland comprise pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and industrial machinery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa will undertake a state visit to Switzerland from 29 to 30 October to strengthen cooperation in trade, science, and youth development, the Presidency announced on Monday.
