The impact of US tariffs on Chinese exports is already benefiting one continent significantly more than the rest: Africa.<\/p>\n
So far in 2025, exports from China to Africa total more than they did for the whole of 2020, and their value is\u00a0set to exceed $200 billion for the first time, Bloomberg reported. Construction machinery, passenger cars, and steel, in particular, have seen some of the highest increases.<\/p>\n
Africa\u2019s share of China\u2019s total exports remains small, at 6%. But recent changes \u2014 which saw China grant\u00a053 African nations duty-free access\u00a0to its markets, as of June \u2014 have altered Beijing\u2019s trade relationship with Africa.<\/p>\n
Duty-free agreements \u201cposition China in stark contrast\u00a0to perceived protectionist policies pursued by some Western powers,\u201d Linda Calabrese wrote in a column for London-based think tank ODI Global in July. \u201cThis reinforces China\u2019s narrative as a reliable and equitable partner for the Global South,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
