Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has confirmed that he will run in Nigeria\u2019s 2027 election while rejecting a joint ticket with fellow ADA-alliance member Atiku Abubakar, according to a press release on Monday.<\/p>\n
Obi participated in a livestream on X Sunday night where he talked about the potential of running as Abubakar\u2019s vice president in 2027:<\/p>\n
\u201cI won\u2019t say I must have the ticket. That\u2019s not leadership. You must work with others, consult widely, and put Nigeria first,\u201d Obi said.<\/p>\n
The following day, several Nigerian media reported that a statement had been released by Obi\u2019s spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, who dismissed the possibility of a joint ticket between Obi and former Vice President Abubakar.<\/p>\n
Obi and Abubakar are two of the most high-profile politicians to join the new All Democratic Alliance party (ADA).\u00a0The coalition brings together some of\u00a0the\u00a0largest opposition parties\u00a0in Nigeria,\u00a0including the Labour Party and the People\u2019s Democratic Party, to\u00a0unite\u00a0the opposition vote and\u00a0beat\u00a0President Tinubu in the 2027 general election.<\/p>\n
However, since its inception, the ADA has been marred by internal disagreement, with reports in May that official meetings had been cancelled because coalition partners couldn\u2019t decide whether to create a new party or join under an existing party.<\/p>\n
Obi\u2019s refusal to serve as deputy to Abubakar comes as no surprise to Dr. Abdul-Wasi Moshood, Head of the Department of Political Science at\u00a0Lagos State University:<\/p>\n
\u201dFor somebody like that to now say okay, and be deputy to another person. It will be practically impossible\u201d, Moshood said in an interview with Africanews.<\/p>\n
The primary reason\u00a0that\u00a0opposition politicians created the ADA was to improve their\u00a0chances of becoming President, according to Moshood, so\u00a0If there is no agreement on one candidate, the future of the alliance looks uncertain.<\/p>\n
