South Africa\u2019s president Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed deep concern at the United States\u2019 entry into the Israel-Iran war.<\/p>\n
His comments come after Washington joined Israel\u2019s bombing campaign of Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Ramaphosa urged the US, Israel, and Iran to give the United Nations \u201cthe opportunity and space\u201d to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.<\/p>\n
There has been mixed reaction from world leaders to the US attack.<\/p>\n
Some have condemned the strikes, while others expressed fears of a wider conflict, while noting the threat posed by Tehran\u2019s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, the UN Security held an exceptional emergency meeting called for by Iran, to discuss the US strikes.<\/p>\n
UN chief, Antonio Guterres said he was \u201cgravely alarmed\u201d by Washington\u2019s use of force.<\/p>\n
“Two days ago, in this very chamber, I made a direct appeal. Give peace a chance. That call was not heeded,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He described the US bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities as a \u201cperilous turn in a region that is already reeling\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom the outset of the crisis. I have repeatedly condemned any military escalation in the Middle East,\u201d Guterres said.<\/p>\n
As Iran said it would continue to defend itself by all means against US and Israeli military aggression, the UN chief said the region\u2019s people “cannot endure another cycle of destruction”.<\/p>\n
