Mali has suspended artisanal gold mining activities from June to September, to protect workers from landslides during the rainy season, the Malian mines ministry said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The ministry said meteorological services have forecast heavy rains from\u00a015 June 15 to 30 September 2025.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for the ministry told Reuters that safety reasons motivated the decision.<\/p>\n
The Malian government\u00a0suspended the granting of new artisanal mining permits to foreigners\u00a0in March, after\u00a0two accidents killed dozens of people, mostly women.<\/p>\n
More than\u00a070 people had died in January 2024, when a tunnel collapsed in an unregulated gold mine.<\/p>\n
Deadly accidents are frequent as artisanal miners often use old-fashion and unregulated methods of digging.\u00a0Illegal mining also increases safety risks.<\/p>\n
Artisanal mining in West Africa has increased in recent years due to growing demand and rising prices.<\/p>\n
The Malian government is\u00a0trying to regain control\u00a0over the country’s gold resources, and is currently involved in a legal battle against\u00a0Canadian gold giant Barrick.<\/p>\n
Mali\u2019s 2024 gold production was estimated at around\u00a051 metric tons, a\u00a023% drop\u00a0from the year before.<\/p>\n
