The Malian army said it had foiled an attack on a military camp in Timbuktu on Monday morning. Local officials and eyewitnesses said a car bomb exploded in the city centre, followed by gunfire.<\/p>\n
The Malian Armed Forces reported\u00a013 deaths, all among the assailants.\u00a0“The terrorists were quickly defeated by the swiftness of the soldiers’ reaction”, the army said in a statement on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n
They said they had seized weaponry and vehicles, and that the situation was under control.<\/p>\n
Terrorist group Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin, or JNIM, has claimed responsibility for the attack, its second in two days.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, JNIM attacked a military base in\u00a0Boulkessi\u00a0in central Mali, near the border with Burkina Faso, killing more than\u00a030 Malian soldiers, according to two security sources.<\/p>\n
The Malian army said it had been forced to pull back but did not confirm the number of casualties.<\/p>\n
JNIM has claimed responsibility for several recent attacks in the region.<\/p>\n
The Al-Qaeda-linked group said it had killed\u00a040 soldiers\u00a0in an assault against a base in Dioura, in central Mali on 24 May 2025.<\/p>\n
In total,\u00a0more than 400 soldiers\u00a0have reportedly been killed by insurgents since the start of May across Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n
The three countries are ruled by military juntas that took power between 2020 and 2023 and pledged to end terrorist violence.<\/p>\n
