{"id":14938,"date":"2025-01-21T05:31:06","date_gmt":"2025-01-21T05:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=14938"},"modified":"2025-01-21T05:31:06","modified_gmt":"2025-01-21T05:31:06","slug":"south-sudan-says-16-sudanese-nationals-killed-in-last-weeks-unrest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/14938\/south-sudan-says-16-sudanese-nationals-killed-in-last-weeks-unrest\/","title":{"rendered":"South Sudan says 16 Sudanese nationals killed in last week&#8217;s unrest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Sudan police said on Monday that 16 Sudanese nationals were killed in\u00a0riots\u00a0last week over the alleged killings of South Sudanese people in Sudan&#8217;s El Gezira region.<\/p>\n<p>Riots erupted in South Sudan&#8217;s capital Juba and elsewhere in the country on Thursday and Friday, with protesters angry about what they believed was the involvement of Sudan&#8217;s military and allied groups in the killings in El Gezira.<\/p>\n<p>The Sudanese army has\u00a0condemned\u00a0what it called &#8220;individual violations&#8221; in El Gezira after human-rights groups blamed it and its allies for ethnically-targeted attacks against civilians accused of supporting the rebel Rapid Support Forces.<\/p>\n<p>South Sudan&#8217;s national police said in a statement: &#8220;16 Sudanese foreign nationals were reported killed in four states.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Police will continue to patrol markets and residential areas to protect Sudanese people, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew, which is still in force.<\/p>\n<p>At least 24 suspects have been arrested and charges will be filed once investigations are complete, South Sudan&#8217;s military said in a separate statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Sudan police said on Monday that 16 Sudanese nationals were killed in\u00a0riots\u00a0last week over the alleged killings of South Sudanese people in Sudan&#8217;s El Gezira region.
