Turkey will file a request with a United Nations tribunal on Wednesday to join South Africa’s genocide lawsuit against Israel, a Turkish official said.<\/p>\n
The intervention declaration will be submitted to the\u00a0International Court of Justice\u00a0in The Hague, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Turkey\u00a0,\u00a0one of the fiercest critics of\u00a0Israel\u00a0‘s actions in\u00a0Gaza\u00a0, will be the latest country to ask to participate in the case.<\/p>\n
Turkish President\u00a0Recep Tayyip Erdogan\u00a0has often compared Israeli Prime Minister\u00a0Benjamin Netanyahu\u00a0to\u00a0Adolf Hitler\u00a0, accused his country of genocide, called for it to be punished by international courts and criticized Western countries for their support of Israel.<\/p>\n
In May, Turkey suspended trade with Israel, citing its assault on Gaza. Unlike Western countries that have designated Hamas\u00a0a\u00a0terrorist organization, Mr. Erdogan has praised the group, calling it a\u00a0liberation movement\u00a0.<\/p>\n
South Africa\u00a0took the case to the\u00a0International Court of Justice\u00a0late last year, accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention through its\u00a0military operations\u00a0in Gaza.<\/p>\n
Israel has strongly rejected\u00a0accusations of genocide\u00a0and said the war in Gaza was a legitimate defensive action against Hamas militants for their October 7 attack in southern Israel that killed about 1,200 people and took 250 hostages.<\/p>\n
Nicaragua ,\u00a0Colombia\u00a0,\u00a0Libya\u00a0,\u00a0Mexico\u00a0,\u00a0Spain\u00a0and Palestinian officials have requested to join the case. The Court has not yet decided on these requests. If admitted to the case, these countries will be able to submit written observations and speak at public hearings\u00a0.<\/p>\n
Preliminary hearings have already taken place in the genocide case against Israel, but the court is expected to take years to issue a final decision.<\/p>\n
Since Erdogan came to power in 2003, Turkey and Israel, former allies, have had volatile relations, marked by periods of high friction and\u00a0reconciliation\u00a0. The conflict in Gaza has disrupted recent attempts to normalize ties.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
