{"id":12744,"date":"2024-08-03T12:50:07","date_gmt":"2024-08-03T12:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=12744"},"modified":"2024-08-03T12:50:07","modified_gmt":"2024-08-03T12:50:07","slug":"endbadgovernance-nigerians-continue-marches-against-cost-of-living-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/12744\/endbadgovernance-nigerians-continue-marches-against-cost-of-living-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"#EndBadGovernance: Nigerians continue marches against cost of living crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Protesters clashed with residents in Lagos on Friday during a demonstration against the country\u2019s worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation.<\/p>\n<p>Carrying placards, bells and Nigeria&#8217;s green-and-white flag, the protesters were met with a heavy security presence on the streets of Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>The protests were mainly over food shortages and accusations of misgovernment and corruption in Africa\u2019s most populous country.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s public officials are among the best paid in Africa, a stark contrast in a country that has some of the world\u2019s poorest and hungriest people despite being one of the continent\u2019s top oil producers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The purchasing power of my salary has been completely eroded,\u201d a protester told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>The mostly young protesters chanted songs as they listed their demands, including the reinstatement of gas and electricity subsidies that were cancelled as part of an economic reform effort.<\/p>\n<p>Violence and looting were concentrated in Nigeria&#8217;s northern states, which are among the hardest hit by hunger and insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International&#8217;s Nigeria office said at least nine people were killed by security forces in Nigeria during mass protests against the economic crisis gripping the country.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities said a police officer was also killed and others injured, while four protesters were killed by a bomb.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds were arrested in the protests that triggered curfews in several states.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Protesters clashed with residents in Lagos on Friday during a demonstration against the country\u2019s worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation.
