Meta said Wednesday it had removed about 63,000 Instagram accounts in Nigeria that were engaging in sexual extortion and had taken down thousands of Facebook groups and pages that were trying to organize, recruit and train new scammers.<\/p>\n
Sexual extortion<\/em>\u00a0, or\u00a0sextortion\u00a0, involves persuading someone to send explicit photos online and then threatening to make the images public if the victim does not pay money or obtain\u00a0sexual favors\u00a0.<\/p>\n Recent high-profile cases include two Nigerian brothers who pleaded guilty to sexually extorting teenage boys and young men in Michigan\u00a0,\u00a0one of whom committed suicide, and a Virginia deputy sheriff who sexually extorted and kidnapped a 15-year-old girl.<\/p>\n Sextortion cases have increased in recent years, particularly driven by a loosely organized group called the\u00a0Yahoo Boys\u00a0, which operates primarily out of\u00a0Nigeria\u00a0, Meta said. The company added that it had applied its policy on\u00a0“dangerous organizations and individuals” to remove<\/em>\u00a0Facebook\u00a0accounts and groups run by the group.<\/p>\n \u201cBecause they\u2019re motivated by money, they can target indiscriminately<\/em>\u00a0,\u201d said Antigone Davis, global head of security at Meta.\u00a0\u201cIn other words, it\u2019s a bit of a scattergun approach: send lots of requests to individuals and see who can respond.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n In January, the FBI warned of a\u00a0“significant increase”<\/em>\u00a0in sextortion cases targeting children. The victims are primarily boys between the ages of 14 and 17, but the FBI said any child can become a victim.<\/p>\n Meta said his investigation found that the majority of the scammers’ attempts were unsuccessful and that they primarily targeted adult males in the United States, but added that\u00a0“some”<\/em>\u00a0attempted to target minors, which Meta reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.<\/p>\n The deleted accounts were part of a\u00a0“coordinated network”<\/em>\u00a0of about 2,500 accounts linked to a group of about 20 people who managed them, according to Meta.<\/p>\n In April, Meta announced it was rolling out new tools on\u00a0Instagram\u00a0to protect young people and combat sexual extortion, including a feature that will automatically fade\u00a0nudity in direct messages\u00a0. Meta is still testing these features as part of its campaign to combat sex scams and other forms of\u00a0\u201cimage abuse<\/em>\u00a0,\u201d and to make it harder for criminals to contact teens.<\/p>\n Davis says users should be wary of messages from people whose photos are\u00a0“highly stylized<\/em>\u00a0,” who are\u00a0“exceptionally good-looking,”<\/em>\u00a0or who have never messaged you before.<\/p>\n “This should give you pause<\/em>\u00a0,” she said.
