{"id":12408,"date":"2024-07-09T12:49:43","date_gmt":"2024-07-09T12:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=12408"},"modified":"2024-07-09T12:49:43","modified_gmt":"2024-07-09T12:49:43","slug":"rwanda-acknowledges-end-of-asylum-deal-with-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/12408\/rwanda-acknowledges-end-of-asylum-deal-with-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda acknowledges end of  asylum deal with UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Rwandan government says it is aware of the UK&#8217;s intention to halt its plan to deport asylum seekers to the East African country.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released late Monday, the Rwandan government spokesperson&#8217;s office said the deal was initiated by the\u00a0UK\u00a0&#8220;to address the irregular immigration crisis affecting the UK &#8211; a problem that concerns the UK, not Rwanda&#8221;\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first time Rwandan authorities have officially commented on plans by Britain&#8217;s new Labour government to cancel the programme, which has been criticised by human rights watchdogs and others as cruel and inhumane.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear whether Rwandan authorities are responding to press reports or have been officially informed of plans to\u00a0terminate the agreement\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>British Prime Minister\u00a0Keir Starmer\u00a0said at his first press conference on Saturday that the Rwanda deportation plan\u00a0was &#8220;dead and buried before it even started&#8221;\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Starmer has denounced the plan as a\u00a0&#8220;gimmick&#8221;\u00a0, although it is unclear what exactly it will do differently as record numbers of people have landed in the first six months of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The Rwanda\u00a0deportation plan was presented as a solution that would deter migrants from risking their lives on a journey that could end with them being deported to East Africa.
