{"id":12081,"date":"2024-06-04T09:23:52","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T09:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=12081"},"modified":"2024-06-04T09:23:52","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T09:23:52","slug":"russian-fm-sergei-lavrov-begins-africa-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/12081\/russian-fm-sergei-lavrov-begins-africa-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"Russian FM Sergei Lavrov begins Africa tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Guinea on Monday on the first leg of a three-country African tour aimed at boosting support for Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s foreign ministry announced the visit on the Telegram social media app.<\/p>\n<p>Lavrov is expected to continue his tour in Chad and Burkina Faso, according to reports by Russian state media.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Russian isolation<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The trip comes as Moscow looks to bolster support from countries on the continent, amidst Russian isolation on the world stage.<\/p>\n<p>After its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia saw its relations with the West plummet.<\/p>\n<p>While the African Union and several African capitals opposed Russia&#8217;s stance, more than half of African countries, including Guinea,\u00a0abstained from UN resolutions\u00a0calling for a withdrawal of Russian troops.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Boosting African ties<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In July last year, Russian president Vladimir Putin hosted several African heads of government at the second\u00a0Russia-Africa summit\u00a0in St Petersburg.<\/p>\n<p>During the summit, Russia made promises focused on delivering grain to a number of African countries, while also declaration an intention to strengthen economic and security cooperation between Moscow and the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s main\u00a0economic interests in Africa\u00a0have centred on its grains, arms, extractives, and nuclear power exports.<\/p>\n<p>More than 70 per cent of all Russian trade with Africa in 2021 was carried out in just four countries\u2014Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, and South Africa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in Guinea on Monday on the first leg of a three-country African tour aimed at boosting support for Moscow.
