{"id":11975,"date":"2024-05-23T15:11:56","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T15:11:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=11975"},"modified":"2024-05-23T15:11:56","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T15:11:56","slug":"chad-idriss-deby-sworn-in-as-president-following-disputed-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/11975\/chad-idriss-deby-sworn-in-as-president-following-disputed-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"Chad: Idriss D\u00e9by sworn in as president following disputed elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chad&#8217;s president-elect, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, was sworn in on Thursday at a ceremony in the capital, N\u2019Djamena, attended by several leaders from the region.<\/p>\n<p>Deby\u2019s inauguration came a week after the constitutional council confirmed he had won the disputed 6 May election outright, with 61 per cent of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>He seized power three years ago after the death of his father, Idriss D\u00e9by, who had ruled Chad with an iron fist for three decades.<\/p>\n<p>A career soldier, Deby junior had promised to hold elections within 18 months, but his government postponed the poll and allowed him to run for president<\/p>\n<p>Opposition leader, Succes Masra, a staunch opponent of the junta won a 18,5 per cent share of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>He unsuccessfully challenged the results of the election, which international NGOs described as neither credible nor free.<\/p>\n<p>Masra resigned as Prime Minister on Wednesday and did not attend the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Chad was the first in a string of countries in the region which experienced coups in the past four years, to hold elections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chad&#8217;s president-elect, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, was sworn in on Thursday at a ceremony in the capital, N\u2019Djamena, attended by several leaders from the region.
