{"id":11414,"date":"2024-04-08T09:43:27","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T09:43:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=11414"},"modified":"2024-04-08T09:43:27","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T09:43:27","slug":"mozambique-over-90-people-killed-after-boat-sinks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/11414\/mozambique-over-90-people-killed-after-boat-sinks\/","title":{"rendered":"Mozambique: over 90 people killed after boat sinks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than people were killed off\u00a0Mozambique&#8217;s\u00a0northern coast on Sunday, when the makeshift\u00a0ferry they were travelling in sank,\u00a0according to\u00a0local media.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0boat was carrying 130 people, including many children, who were attempting to make the crossing to\u00a0Mozambique\u00a0Island from Lunga in\u00a0Nampula province.<\/p>\n<p>Local online media\u00a0TV Di\u00e1rio Nampula reported that some of those onboard had been travelling to attend a fair on the island while others were fleeing\u00a0a cholera outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>Nampula Secretary of State Jaime Neto was reported as saying that\u00a0misinformation about an alleged cholera outbreak caused people to panic and board the boat.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because the boat was overcrowded and unsuited to carry passengers it ended up sinking,&#8221; said Mr. Neto.<\/p>\n<p>While rescue efforts continued on Monday, only five people of the 130 onboard have so far been rescued, according to officials.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside neighbouring countries Zimbabwe and Malawi, Mozambique has in recent months been affected by a deadly cholera outbreak that authorities are battling to contain.<\/p>\n<p>Since October 2023,\u00a0Mozambique has reported 13,700 confirmed cases and 30 deaths.\u00a0Nampula province has been one of the worst-affected by the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>The northern province has seen an influx of people fleeing conflict in neighbouring Cabo Delgado province, with the latest wave of violence in February resulting in over 33,000 new arrivals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than people were killed off\u00a0Mozambique&#8217;s\u00a0northern coast on Sunday, when the makeshift\u00a0ferry they were travelling in sank,\u00a0according to\u00a0local media.
