{"id":10481,"date":"2024-01-09T11:42:20","date_gmt":"2024-01-09T11:42:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=10481"},"modified":"2024-01-09T11:42:20","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T11:42:20","slug":"south-africas-anc-says-zuma-no-longer-its-member-ramaphosa-confident-of-easy-victory-in-2024-poll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/10481\/south-africas-anc-says-zuma-no-longer-its-member-ramaphosa-confident-of-easy-victory-in-2024-poll\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa\u2019s ANC says Zuma no longer its member; Ramaphosa confident of easy victory in 2024 poll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s governing African National Congress (ANC) says former president Jacob Zuma is no longer its member after he \u201cautomatically expelled himself\u201d after announcing he now supports the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing party supporters in Barberton on Sunday, ANC secretary general Fikile Mbalula said Zuma had \u201cautomatically expelled himself\u201d in view of his December 2023 statement in which he said he would not campaign or vote for the ANC in this year\u2019s general elections because he had thrown his full weight behind the MK party.<\/p>\n<p>Mbalula said if Zuma had issues with the leadership of the ANC he should have properly addressed them through the right channels within the organisation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t want him to go. We are shocked but not surprised when a former president of the ANC takes such a decision,\u201d Mbalula said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the ANC would not subject Zuma to a disciplinary hearing over his remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ANC didn\u2019t expel Jacob Zuma,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cHe has expelled himself. And his interpretation that he is still an ANC member till he dies \u2013 and is not leaving \u2013 is his own interpretation.<\/p>\n<p>Mbalula revealed that the ANC would on Monday approach the courts to attempt to reclaim the uMkhonto weSizwe name. \u00a0uMkhonto weSizwe was the armed wing of the ANC during South Africa\u2019s liberation struggle and the party claims that it has sole rights to that name.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ramaphosa confident of easy ANC victory in 2024 poll<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>President Cyril Ramaphosa is confident that the governing African National Congress (ANC) will cruise to an easy victory in this year\u2019s South African general elections because the party \u201covercome 342 years of colonialism and apartheid\u201d to liberate the country.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the party\u2019s 112th anniversary celebrations in Mbombela in Mpumalanga province on Monday, Ramaphosa said those who thought the ANC could be \u201cairbrushed out of existence or removed\u201d from government were dreaming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not going to happen,\u201d Ramaphosa said.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cIt\u2019s just dreams because the ANC, which has led this process (of liberation), has embedded itself in the hearts and minds of our people \u2013 and through trial and tribulation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa said \u201cthrough the ups and downs, we were able to prevail as the ANC \u2013 and we were able to finally overcome the 342 years of colonialism and apartheid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the party\u2019s role in the fight against apartheid which led to the 1994 democratic elections was characterised \u201cas a breakthrough \u2013 and not as a victory \u2014 because it was a beach-head moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The president said the ANC mission to better the lives of South Africans was continuing and those who underestimated the party would be surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have reached a point where now we can march together to register greater achievements as we move on to improve the lives of our people,\u201d Ramaphosa said.<\/p>\n<p>In the past 30 years, the ANC-led government has changed South Africa from what it was in 1994 for the better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether they like it or not, the ANC has changed this country,\u201d he said, adding that much, however, remained to be done.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa\u2019s governing African National Congress (ANC) says former president Jacob Zuma is no longer its member after he \u201cautomatically expelled himself\u201d after announcing he now supports the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.
